I try to avoid Google at any cost and have for years. I use Duck Duck Go for search. I do not use gmail. I avoid anything resembling automated home (this is easy as I must use satellite broadband which has caps on daily usage).

There are other networked black holes I try to avoid also but Google is the worst, IMO. Using a VPN is also helpful.

The average wild wild web user has no idea.
