Since the topic came up I thought I would mention that I received a solicitation a month or so ago from an outfit called Metromile. They offer auto insurance on a per month basis, the cost consists of a base monthly fee and a per mile charge. They claim if you don't drive all that much you can save a substantial amount on a yearly basis. I was intrigued and got an online quote, and you can indeed save hundreds if you keep the miles down. They track mileage via a device you plug into you OBD port. (They apparently don't track you on road behavior though <gggg>).
