Hi el,

Catalytic convertors have been required by the EPA on cars since 1975.

Almost all trucks and diesels have had them since 2006 maybe a bit earlier.

Not only do all vehicles require them in the US,but many states have emission tests that require the catalytic convertors to be functional. This adds a service demand for catalytic convertors as well.

If you have a GM car - the new SAR oil rating is required for Dexos graded oil.

This type of oil has a stricter requirement of minimal elements that when burned in a catalytic convertor tend to coat the platinum/palladium pellets with in the convertor. Platinum/palladium can get very hot before melting or powdering the platinum/palladium pellets.

The current requirement for emissions equipment is that it must last 100,000 miles. This warranty increment will be enlarged to 200,000 miles into the future.

Cleaner oil will allow convertors to have a longer life and eliminate (burn) bad emissions for a longer life.

When implemented, that may relieve some demand for platinum/palladium.

Hard to believe China has not required them!

They are expensive!

A 1 ton diesel exhaust system can cost $1200.00 Smaller pup convertors $200.00 2 per vehicle.
