| | | Been there, done that - with a very mellow cat who was afraid of nothing. However, a 5 day road trip freaked him out about ten miles into the trip.
Best advice, keep him in a crate, preferably the soft sided kind with the windows and a top flap so he can poke his head out. Sherpa makes a nice one with a handle as well as a shoulder strap and has a tether inside in case he decides to jump out. Once he gets used to the rhythm, you can take him out and put him on your lap but put him back in before you open the car door. If you don't have a crate wrap him in a blanket whenever you transfer him from car to hotel.
If you're spending nights in hotels/motels along the way, do NOT let him get under the bed. Block it off with luggage and extra blankets, pillows or whatever else the room has available. We once had to take apart a hotel bed to get him out from under because coaxing wasn't doing it for him. After that fun experience, we blocked off the beds.
Take kitty litter and keep some in the car in case he gets nervous and for the hotel. Nervous cats get thirsty so take water - and use his own dish.
If your cat is leash trained with a harness (mine wasn't) that would be a great help.
