Robert,
Re -- Some Taiwan-based computer makers are planning to use such less-expensive non-Intel microchips.

A ringing endorsement one would say "planning to use"? Furthermore, Cyrix/AMD may sell their chips for a lower price than Intel's pentium, but they cost more to make. Thus Intel has room if it chooses, to sell pentiums really cheap for the settop market (the context of the previous post). Which by the way is currently a different market from the PC market and would only be additional gravy.

Meanwhile cyrix/NSM will continue to lose money. Its the economies of scale you understand.
