Great thread. I too have just been reading the Cornell book and another by Al Ries about the virtues of "Focus." Ries of Ries and Trout fame - marketeers: positioning the battle of the mind - thinks that many companies suffer because of lack of focus. Spin-offs are effective tools for refocusing both the spiner and spinee.

Marriott is going to be doing a spin-off soon. I'll get more information about it.
