I remember reading an article about him quite a few years ago that said he was at one time the most famous actor in the world.

His appeal seems to be that he said so little in a movie but his demeanor and physical presence was something people everywhere related to that went beyond the language barriers. Take for example his portrayal in Once Upon a Time in the West. Or in The Dirty Dozen: Ralph Meeker tries to diagnosis his personality so he asks for him to give him a word for every random one he tosses out, and he keeps saying "Baseball." LOL.
