The big surprise mentioned yesterday is:

[photo] At the entrance to Paradise Cave. Fancy meeting a high school classmate and her husband 8000 miles and 40 years later from where we last saw each other!

After leaving [high school classmate] and [her husband] in Phong Nha we took a 7:30 pm flight from nearby Dong Hoi to Hanoi. The flight took only a little over an hour, but it seemed very long. The plane had poor air circulation, and all 65 passengers had been perspiring in the heat and humidity since morning. Smelled worse than a high school men’s locker room. But we survived! Somehow. Have we used up our 9 lives yet?

[I could put up scores of photos from the caves in Phong Nha. YAAP! (yet another amazing place). ]

Upon leaving Dong Hoi we began the most intense part of our trip. The next day we drove 3 hours to Ha Long Bay, spent several hours on the boat, and then drove back to Hanoi to catch the sleeper bus to Ha Giang, where our new guide picked us up at 3:30 am and took us to a hostel where we slept for 3 hours before embarking on a 140 km car/motorbike trip through mountains with stunning scenery.
