We stopped by the roadside and our guide led me about 100 yards down a small path to a border marker. In the fog I looked to the other side of the border and saw someone moving at a high speed, wondering if they were running from something or patrolling very quickly.

Official border marker with China. iPhone says the photo was taken in Yunnan, China:

Unofficial border marker, about 20 yards beyond the official marker. Note where the ground disappears into the fog... I saw someone's head pop up very briefly over there.

Goodbye to Ha Giang, I will miss this place and the people here. Now we’re off on the sleeper bus to Hanoi before heading to Ninh Bình for a few days as we start to wind down our adventure in Vietnam.

Hmong girls packing fuel for cooking. They won't stop for a photo unless you pay them a little. Imagine, if you were carrying a pack like that, would you stop for free?
