| | | Because I have limited carbs and sugar for the last 5 years...........I went gluten free at that point, but now I don't eat grains at all.............I believe I have staved off what could have become full blown diabetes. I never had an A1C level over 5.9 but getting to that level was enough for me to start worrying about it because I have a family history of Type 2 diabetes.
For most of my adult life I have instinctively gone several hours between meals, and I very rarely snack. This seems to be what works best for me. I tried eating 5-6 small meals a day, and it always made me feel full and bloated. The diet I'm on now says 16 hour fasts are a good thing, so it fits right in with my lifestyle. Of course limiting meals reduces the amount of carbs I eat, so I'm losing weight.
It took me years to learn how to eat right. I counted/limited calories, I counted/limited carbs, I counted/limited fats all at different times in my life and my AC1 level kept rising. It has helped to understand the fat, calorie and carb content of foods, and the way they affect my body. Interestingly I actually have more energy, better mental acuity and a sort of peace I haven't had for years since I started eating the way I'm eating now.
The key is to prevent diabetes in the first place. Of course none of this applies to Type 1 Diabetes.
This is the diet we have been on for the last 4 months. It's been a complete life changer for my husband and I..........all positive. The problem with this diet is getting past the first 6 weeks of starting and sticking to it. After that, it becomes a lifestyle.
