Hello, thread.

I saw an article from IDC Research on worldwide optical storage that has some relevance to Oakt. The relevant points that I managed to find in the article are the following.

1. CD ROM market grew 52% in 1997 from 1996 and will most likely continue its growth in 1998.

2. CD/RW experienced 142% growth in 1997 and is the fasted growing segment within the optical storage market.

3. DVD has so far been slow to start. A lack of good titles along with high prices are cited as possible reasons. DVD is predicted to pick up momentum in the second half of 1998.

I believe that the situation of the optical storage market bodes pretty well for Oak because it will give Oak time to develop the DVD market while continuing to sell its CD ROM/RW products. However, the Q4 earnings results are very important because it will show the degree of Oak's vulnerability to the Asian crisis. Let's hope that it will come out ok.

I also did a feature set comparison of TrokaCSS, Oak's DVD decoder, with ZiVA, C-Cube's corresponding products. It seems to me that the Oak decoder has almost all the features that ZiVA has. The only thing missing from Troika is 5.1 channel audio output, which will probably keep Oak from entering the high end DVD player market. The recent introduction of a reference design and an software operating system should help becuase Cube has it too. However, there is no way for me to tell real world performance differences, which could be more important than feature set.

Oak is scheduled to release its Q4 results on 6/22. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Regards,
Baoho
