Would note that the industrial revolution was late in China for a lot of reasons, one of which is the industrial revolution elsewhere and how that revolt was put to use, against the deplorable ruled by the corrupt. The fix was hard medicine, effect still hard this day, as high potency medication tends to be. Think chemotherapy.

Foreign direct investment during the first decade of China reform was ~80% attributable to Chinese diaspora and not multinationals from all over. The little guus de-risked the situation.

In 1984 I arrived in China as member of team of 3 for a multinational (Otis) to negotiate then help to run a JV. Otis invested 1.5M for 30% of an ultra leveraged structure involving the largest elevator company in China (annual production 400 units of low-rise lifts). Payback was 18-months cash on cash, then Otis expanded share ownership as well as company size. Then China got on w/ program to build high rise buildings. Very little elevator / escalator was exported from China. Had Otis not done what it did, Schindler or hitachi or Mitsubishi or Kone ventures would have done the Tianjin Otis deal. At the time no American lift company could hope to remain strong globally without China venture. Probably still the case.

Going forward, societally speaking, China needs and shall get tweaking, tuning, refinement, relatively speaking.

Elsewhere unclear or less clear, as re to potency of medication or drastic extent of surgery.
