I generally find the discussion about the algo traders effects on the market to be simplistic. However, I fully believe that they act as amplification of what would otherwise be medium (because of where the VIX is) speed moves. I see very little evidence that any of these machine learning based trading systems would ever learn a counter trend strategy (the classes would be very unbalanced and difficult to make trend-following-type money on even if your accuracy was pretty good). I guess that's why I think of them as short term trend magnifiers. And they feed on themselves and reinforce what they think the true market mechanics are.

And here we are erasing years of biotech gains...well sort of. Everyone is worried cheap money is gone but I'm pretty sure I heard it say "hasta mañana" and not "hasta la vista".
