I agree with you on this. HOWEVER, there is a very simple explanation as to why they did it when they did.

The ostensible purpose of the split (which I believe) was in order to incentivize employees with stock options. This had to be done prior to 1998 in order to be there for the 1998 Employee Stock Option plan.

That is why they did it when they did.

However, for the rest of us poor saps, it did hurt the short term momentum. It will return on the 23rd. Look for great earnings and renewed institutional interest in the weeks ahead.
