Regardless of how successful the cable modem markets will be in the future, it would be a complete disaster for NSCP if they attempted to focus on this market. They would not see any profits from it for at least a couple of years, and would probably be going out of business because of it. Moreover, if they did focus on this and it did prove to be as important as you claim, you can be sure that MSFT would respond with a product that would probably be integrated for free into MSFT OSes, putting all of NSCP's efforts to waste.

Unlike NSCP, MSFT can afford to spend hundreds of millions or billions of dollars of investments into technology that will not be profitable for years to come.
