12/28/2018 Contest update
Attention Biotechies: Only a few more days to submit your portfolio to the 2019 Biotech Charity Contest.
The Contest submission deadline is Tuesday, 1/1/2018, Midnight, PST. Here’s the link to the 2019 Biotech Charity Contest board:
Subject 60008

The earlier portfolios are posted, the easier it is for me to set up the Contest spreadsheets.

Please help me publicize the 2019 Contest by posting the Contest info and link on boards & Twitter sites where biotechies hang out.

Given the chaos in the nation’s capital, I guess it’s fitting stocks wound down the year with one of the most meshuga weeks I’ve seen in my many decades following the markets. And there’s one more day of trading left!
When the wild ride was over, biotechs had actually cut their YTD losses by a bit. And, at Friday’s close, the Contest median was down -22.34% YTD (vs. down -27.99% YTD a week ago), the Nasdaq Biotech Index (NBI) was down -11.06% YTD (vs. down -15.08% YTD a week ago), the smaller-cap S&P Biotechnology Select Industry Index (SPSIBI) was down -17.30% YTD (vs. down -22.67% YTD a week ago), while the Nasdaq Composite Index (IXIC) was down -4.62% YTD (vs. down -8.26% YTD a week ago).
With just a single trading day left, THID’s portfolio, up 33.04% YTD, has a strong grip on the Contest lead. SPTAD’s portfolio, up 24.54% YTD, jumped into second place and POMP’s portfolio, up 20.41% YTD, dropped to third place.

I do intend to post the Official Winner shortly after the close on Monday, so those wanting a 2018 charitable tax deduction will be able to do so in time. However, without meaning to jinx THID’s portfolio, it does seem likely it will take the 2018 Biotech Stock Charity Contest crown. So, for those wanting to make their donation early, THID’s chosen charity is the Methusaleh Foundation. The Foundation website states it is a 501(C)(3) organization, making donations tax deductible. Here’s the website link: mfoundation.org

At Friday's close, 8 of the 62 Contest portfolios were in the green, with 15 beating the NBI and 23 beating the SPSIBI.
The 230 Contest stock picks have an average YTD loss of -22.84% and a median YTD loss of -35.93%, with only 59 showing a gain for the year.
Below is the Top Ten list. Also below are the Top 5 & Bottom 5 Stocks for the week ranked by % Gained and % Lost YTD. (Prices not converted to US$ in these Tables.)
Portfolio adjustments: None.
(All corrections, especially adjustments for splits & mergers, greatly appreciated.)
Have a safe & relaxing final weekend of the year, biotechies!
And try to spare some time for selecting your portfolio stocks for the 2019 Biotech Charity Contest!
Peace & good health,
Bulba
