Michael, Comminution is fine grinding, communition is making guns together<GG>.
But you are right about ball mills vanishing before they make 1000 mesh stuff(out of their own balls)

I have seen some mills for brittle stuff that use kinetic impact of air entrained material. It will work on gold bearing quartz etc, but it sure costs a lot. It can be used on rubbery stuff with deep freezing. Common in the pharmaceutical and fine chemical industries, rare in our business.
The rotating plate mills are about the most cost effective really fine grind mills. The Balls and rods seem to top out in the 200-400 mesh area, it depends on the grinding index( a composite assessment of brittleness, fractureability, toughness, hardness etc that equivaltes to kilowatt hours per ton to a certain size. I could be more precise if you wish to get into it.

I will look for that thread and throw in some rubber granules.

I could not find the thread you started??
