James, of course I remember Nattering Nabobs of Negativism. I love alliteration. Spiro was my man, the Dan Quayle of his day, always good for a laugh, always the loyal hachetman for Nixon. Always available to receive envelopes of cash in the White House too, as I recall.
Of course, the phrase is properly credited to master wordsmith William Safire, a guy I can relate to even if he's not totally compatible politically. Sadly, I've misattributed "Facts are stupid things" also, it belongs to an even bigger flaming liberal, Ronald Reagan himself. The correct version is apparently supposed to be "Facts are stubborn things", attributed to John Adams. I don't know where Donahoe got his "Facts are troubling things", but I take it as an indication that he's not all that interested in facts, at this level anyway.
Cheers, Dan.
P.S. Sorry about MO, another misattribution. Now not only do they push cancer sticks, they got good Wisconsin beer to fog the brain and destroy the liver and good Oscar Meyer "meats" to clog the arteries. Of course, since they bought General Foods I assume they got some healthy things under the umbrella too. I don't tell people to dump that stock any more than I tell them to dump MSFT, but they do seem to have a similar respect for "truth". Like Ron said, facts are stupid things. |
