Stupid Intel product "Quick Web Technology"

David Anderson quoted a WSJ article about a new Intel product "Quick Web Technology will give Internet users faster access to Web pages with lots of pictures by compressing some of the information from the graphical images so that there is less data to transmit. The result is lower-quality graphics, but served up at a higher speed....

"Interested users could buy the service through their Internet-service provider for an additional charge of about $5 a month, and would have the ability to turn it off if they wanted to see higher-quality images.
"

I can't believe this. I'm supposed to pay extra to download badly designed web pages. What will they think of next! the only surprise is that it's not a Microsoft product.

Obviously, if the web pages you're using are designed right, and the graphics are selected to transfer quickly (as has recently been discussed in this thread in the discussion about scanners, like in #11741), you don't need this feature. And one can always turn the images off for free.

Fooey on this one. I'll bet against it.
