James,
Short interest is the number of shares that have been sold short with the investor expecting to repurchase the shares at a lower price. This is a negative indicator in that the person shorting the stock is expecting the stock to go down in price and to have so many shares shorted indicates a lot of people have confidence in the stock going lower. On the positive side, at some point the shares sold short will have to be repurchased, causing the stock to rise in value if a number of people buy the stock at the same time. Therefore, for you to say something is cooking, in the case of Nexstar, it probably means they are having a difficult time with their sales or drug development.
