jim--

thats why i asked<G>.

i talked to someone at TI in IR about the buyout and asked about this issue, and he confirmed that they wanted to make the silicon since the margins are typically higher and the business is easier to manage, than if you added the complexity of having to set up an entirely new equipment division, and the sales channels for it.

granted, this was back in november, so i dont know how accurate it is now. set top boxes? i knew they were hoping to use their chips for them, but i did not know they wanted to make the actual box.

to be honest, i dont understand why a semi company would like to make the actual boxes. part of intels success has been their lack of a box making subsidiary, IMHO, and i think it would be a mistake to try to make the entire solution.

thanks for the heads up on the set top boxes though. i am looking forward to hearing more about this.

good luck to all,
trey
