I agree with bob6496 that you've posed several excellent questions. With regard to KVH waiting to ink a contract to protect its IP, I don't believe they would/should wait. As near as KVH can come to an all-encompassing set of patents filed hopefully would suffice. Exceptions occur most often with Pacific Rim companies/governments and in those cases no level of patent protection is adequate. Of course, the use of NDAs are a given.
Today's news represents a significant win for KVH with respect to retaining/attracting tech talent to its workforce.
A side note: Raymond James -- which has an analyst who follows KVH -- served as an advisor to Mobileye when it was acquired by Intel.
