there are a few ways to "score" the race between the various ADSL chipset vendors:

- who already has chips in the marketplace? the sooner you get product out, the sooner you learn what needs to be improved.

- what "generation" is the chipset? how many times has the vendor gone back and made major improvements? each product generation represents more experience and efficiency built into the product.

- how many chips/components comprise the ADSL chipset? fewer components is better but harder to implement.

- how much power does the chipset consume? less is always better, particularly for chipsets that go into equipment for the phone company's central office (CO).

- programmability: is the ADSL capability of the chipset field-upgradable or is the logic hardcoded into the silicon? programmable solutions, usually based on DSP technology, have an advantage in that their programming can be updated simply by downloading new software into the chipset.
