I was at Camp Pendleton for combat training and some of the remnants of props for "Sands of Iwo Jima" were still evident along the beach. We were told stories about the filming. Thinking back on it I believe most of those stories were largely made up and/or greatly exaggerated, but a couple of the senior NCO's claimed to know about the filming. Mid 1955, so I guess that would have been possible.
