LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A man who poured hot coffee on a flight attendant and tried to open a plane door during landing pleaded guilty Friday to interfering with a flight crew and could face life in prison. In his guilty plea, Thomas Kasper, 36, acknowledged he used a dangerous weapon -- the coffee pot full of scalding liquid -- during a scuffle on a Continental Airlines flight from Houston to Los Angeles on July 14. A flight attendant suffered severe burns on the hand. The disturbance erupted when Kasper and his traveling companion Susan Callihan were denied an upgrade to first class. Both Kasper and Callihan are from Santa Barbara, Calif. Callihan, who also faces the federal charge of disrupting the flight by trying to kick down the cockpit door, is scheduled to go on trial next week. On Friday, United States District Judge Dickran Tevrizian scheduled sentencing for Kasper on April 27. Kasper, who also nearly opened one of the plane's doors when it landed, faces a maximum sentence of life in prison. It'll be interesting to see the sentence. A message needs to be sent, and he seems to be a deserving messenger.
