Do you think he even took a science class?

Yes, I think he attended lots of them. He never went to university to study Science, but he certainly had an interest in the subject. Over a decade of study seemingly. (If you believe the Heartland.org bio)

"Coleman earned a B.A. degree in Journalism in 1957 from the University of Illinois, and after a decade of self-study and correspondence classwork obtained the American Meteorological Society’s full Professional Meteorologist membership. He was honored by the AMS as Broadcast Meteorologist of the Year. He later allowed his AMS membership to expire in protest of the AMS becoming more political than scientific."

I can see why many have tendered resignations when they feel politics had shaded science. I dont see that as any kind of scientific weakness at all.
