I believe that definition is the culprit. MSFT et. al. should be refering to a higher level interface which not only includes hardware-software boundry, but also software-user boundry. The "Computer Users Environment" (CUE) would encompass all which you state plus some code which be considered apps by today's definitions (i.e. Desktop navigation, etc.) Is not the easy use of the computer hardware and software by humans the main reason for most computer companies today.

This whole business of "where can Microsoft go today" being dictated by extra-industry eggheads and politicos is lame. I think this whole thing is a Clinton-Reno diversion from something else. There is just to much effort by the administration for the size of the alleged transgression by Microsoft. Just my observation.

The latest Businessweek does a good job on the whole Microsoft picture.
