RE: i think these

naturally.

Don't even wast your time trying to eat those birds. A friend of mine had a lot of layers and he would slaughter and eat one or two from time to time. Too much effort for the results --> too lean and tuff.

California's central valley is one of the great bread baskets of the world and we have great prices on food. I suspect that chicken prices have been under pressure a lot lately as the local family owned chicken producer Zachy Farms (been around since 1928) recently filed for bankruptcy.

Believe it or not, right now that fancy chickens are selling at $1.99 per lb (regular price) which I think is a real bargin -- they are really good.

I've lived in the same neighborhood for 30 years so even when stuff isnt marked down I will haggle with the butcher. For example, I see 6 lamb shanks prices at $6.99 or $7.99 per lb with an expiration date of the NEXT day and I'm shopping in the evening. I know this particular grocer (large chain) just tosses them into a rendering bin if they don't sell, so I bring them to the attention of the butcher:

Me: Looks like you gotta 6 nice lamb shanks that need to be sold by tomorrow.

Butcher: What are you suggesting?

Me: I'm suggesting you mark them all down to $2.99 lb and I will buy them all.

Butcher: OK

When you're a pauper with 6 kids to feed - you learn to shop (all but one of my kids out of the house now, + said one kid's daughter).

Our Farmer's Markets are awesome.

I paid $2.00 for this butter lettuce (pic taken in 2015 , current price is $2.50)

and got these two heads for $1.00 each (current price is not $1.50 - $2.00)
