Can Trump negotiate his resignation?

He could have…..in 2017/2018.
Unfortunately for him, that ship has sailed.
Why?
Donald Trump wouldn't shut up about the investigation — Trump's defense has consisted of slandering the investigators and witnesses, lying about his role in the matter, and attacking the federal justice system itself. He has made it nearly impossible for the system to allow him an “out” in any manner that wouldn't appear as them being complicit with his crimes.Trump has made too many enemies — Another of his brilliant strategies is to personally attack people whose assistance he may need later. Not only has done this to the Democrats, he's also done this to members of his own party. Not many people are inclined to assist him in finding an “out" at this point. The people who are coming after him don't need to make any deals — Trump has no one higher to give them, people who are in his orbit have provided a wealth of information already, and Trump's leverage in the matter is limited. Why make a deal when you can simply force a resignation, or wait until his loss at the polls and indict him then? It would set a bad precedent — Trump has known since the beginning that something like this has been coming.

Instead of stepping out of the way and leaving on his own, he's tried to bully and bluster his way out of it. To prevent any future POTUS from thinking that he or she can do the same, an example must be made of someone. Trump is as good as anybody to be that “someone.”It doesn't help Trump to resign — The state of New York is coming after his business empire. Other states are looking into his business transactions while POTUS. And New Jersey may open an investigation into multiple labor violations at a Trump property there. And those are the KNOWN investigations. Frankly, it doesn't benefit Donald Trump to resign at this point as that will leave him vulnerable to state level charges, even if all potential federal charges are dropped.Donald Trump had a narrow window between when Mike Flynn decided to cooperate and when Michael Cohen’s offices/home/hotel room were raided by the FBI where he could have negotiated a deal. That window might have remained open until Paul Manafort’s first trial.
However, it's now closed.
There's no reason to offer Donald Trump any deals or leniency as the same results can be achieved without giving him a facesaving out in the process. |
