To me, it is amazing, that people in their 50'thies are pushed out. I can speak only for myself, and post that at my age now I am much smarter than I was at 45, I have a much broader and rounded vision of the scientific disciplines which enables me to envision more complex systems that work seamlessly together. I can find solutions to a variety of problems much faster due to my experience and enhanced knowledge. New Ideas just flow.

It can be that this is a result of myself never stopping learning new disciplines if needed, and now I am actually a polymath in several disciplines only because I know also what to ask and what may work together.

As an example, knowing to ask the right question I found a use for deuterium in the pharmaceutical industry and MRI diagnosis only because I faced a problem and remembered that the electromagnetic resonance is different from hydrogen.

I am not familiar with big corporations, but I would attest that only last year I meet more idiots in a high managerial position than years before and I think that is the problem - the mediocre stays, if he knows to swim the internal politics of a company. Exactly like in real life politics - see how below average the veteran senators are not to mention the golden one.
