Michael,
I assume you ask this-knowing of course that the answer has to be no- because it illustrates the difficulty of deciding where on the continuum of government and societal interference we decide "enough is enough". This particular question is actually easy as the issue of secondhand smoke is still being heavily debated and it would be difficult to say just when exposure becomes life-threatening or even abusive. Removing children is difficult even when there is hard and direct evidence of physical abuse. Termination of parental rights is even more difficult and biological parents can fight termination for years, despite efforts to shorten foster care duration. I am unwilling to grant society too much freedom (read much at all) in determining what is healthy for my child. Certainly in cases of extreme, life-threatening abuse or neglect, we should intervene, but when we begin to micromanage every aspect of childrearing, we move from intervention to intrusion. I tend to side with Terry on these issues.
(By the way, the school has begun to require community service hours for graduation. CW is incensed. He has thousands of hours accumulated because of his UN work, but is furious that they would make his diploma contingent on this.)
