Seems other people are having problems with Mojave sleep mode. Crashes & other unexpected. Unknown whither problems occurring on going to sleep or on trying to wake up. This article has some suggestions on trouble shooting various issues including crashes. support.apple.com I didn't do an extensive search, so there may be better articles. There is a mode called "safe sleep". Never heard of that before. Says in that case use power button to wake up. I guess if the power button wakes up the computer, it was in "safe sleep". I don't know how you would know otherwise.
