Roger- further evidence of the growing use of sales force automation (SFA) software. Sometime ago IBM got out of the business of selling supplies for its computers and printers, or so I am told. Seeing Hewlitt-Packard reaping profits from the market for supplies for H-P equipment, IBM has decided to go back into the business. However they are going to outsource the entire line from manufacturing to sales. I spoke the other day with the individual who has the contract to provide the sales force, nationally and internationally. His salesmen will be linked via the web with SFA software from a privately held company. The software will link manufacturers, warehouses, and IBM hardware salesmen to the salesforce. It sounds like the company will consist of the salesmen in the field and their laptops. A virtual company. I don't know whether IBM will have an ownership interest in the sales company but about all they are doing is putting their brand name on the product.
