Regarding the petaflops championship, is it like the tallest buildings race? Why care?

I like being close to the ground.

My little device has enough petaflops so it's unclear why winning the race to quadrillions if flops matters.

I don't want a tallest building or to land on Mars or have the land speed record.

Getting climate models to pour out garbage faster is apparently good, as is calculating atomic bomb yield or something. I could consult Wikipedia but my brain is flopping and can't be bothered.
