Hi Doug,

In Wisconsin, each summer I grow 60 tomato plants and 72 pepper plants in 6 raised bed gardens. We make a lot of Salsa as gifts, seasoned tomato sauce and tomato juice and pickles. Sauerkraut in a large way as well.

This last spring I added 2 big bales of sphagnum peat moss within the 6 beds (12x16) and 2 50 pound bags of "Black Cow composted manure in each bed as well as two bags of miracle grow garden soil in each bed.

I grow many other types of plants, but in general my harvest and plant health was just the best I've ever experienced (even with a long winter.

I start my plants in late february from seeds, and transplant them in late may or first week of june at the latest.

If we are to endure colder temps and shorter growing seasons, then soil preparation, early seeding and cutting back any shade that encroaches on one's garden are excellent initial steps that can definitely increase one's garden yield for years.

Cold weather green houses are a lot of fun as well. My neighbor here in Houston eats tomatoes all winter long. He has a thick plastic greenhouse built from 2x2's with drip irrigation.

Lots of ways to stretch out a cool summer and make something out of nothing for warm winter weather!

Bob
