Janet,
Here in the San Francisco Bay Area, many people go into nursing homes only because they have no family or sense of community, and the nursing home environment serves to take up some of that slack.
Yup, I guess it takes real intestinal fortitude to remain a smoker these days--especially here in Northern California! I will admit to having a problem buying into the premise that everyone who smokes tobacco will die a horrible and premature death because of it. It also helps to realize that I have never had a smoking-related illness. In my family, only my grandfathers smoked, and both were in their 80s when they died. Of course, the illnesses that brought about their deaths may have been related to their smoking, but really!
One way or another, we all will die. In conversation, people will often say, "If I die . . .," rather than, "When I die . . ." Death is inevitable and too few people are of a mind to deal with that eventuality.
Maybe you can help me on this: was there once a singing group called The Fleetwoods and am I confusing it with Fleetwood Mac?
