SK Hynix saw its revenues and profits hit record-high levels for the second consecutive year in 2018, but revenues and profits started showing weakness in the fourth quarter.

SK Hynix reported operating profits of KRW4.43 trillion (US$3.93 billion) on consolidated revenues of KRW9.94 trillion for the fourth quarter of 2018. The results show decreases of 32% in operating income and 13% in revenues.

SK Hynix generated net profits of about KRW3.4 trillion in the fourth quarter, down 28% on quarter. "Memory demand slowed down in the second half and the supply shortage was resolved," said the company. "The memory market environment rapidly changed."

SK Hynix disclosed its DRAM bit shipments slipped 2% sequentially in the fourth quarter, while ASPs fell 11%. As for NAND flash, bit shipments climbed 10% on quarter but ASPs declined by 21%.

Nevertheless, the overall market conditions were favorable to the company in all of 2018, driven by high demand for data centers and high-performance mobile devices, SK Hynix noted.

SK Hynix posted operating profits surged 52% on year to KRW20.84 trillion in 2018, while consolidated revenues increased 34% to KRW40.45 trillion. Net profits for the year came to KRW15.54 trillion, rising 46% on year. The results all hit record highs.

SK Hynix noted it will be focusing on high value-added products and technologies this year. The company will also expand its customer base of 16Gb DDR4 products to increase the adoption of high-density DRAM modules by server customers. Meanwhile, SK Hynix will actively respond to customer demand for HBM2 and GDDR6 products, while moving forward ramping up its 1Xnm DRAM output and transitioning to a newer 1Ynm process.

For NAND flash, SK Hynix with its 72-layer 3D NAND intends to further strengthen its position in the enterprise SSD and mobile segments, while maximizing profitability by mass producing 96-layer 4D NAND "at the right time," the company said
