Dear old 'n cranky, That's how cookies work with web advertising. If you visit the Pizza Hut web site and then visit SI, you are much more likely to see an advertisement for Pizza Hut. They want to "close the deal". You'll especially notice this with Amazon.com - you can view a product on Amazon or e-bay and then go to SI or Facebook and you will literally see ads for that exact product on the next site you visit. We cooperate with web advertising because it allows us to provide our service for free. Under GDPR, you are supposed to be able to opt out from advertisers being able to track you from site to site, and the consent control has a page that allows one to opt out from third-party tracking on a per-advertiser or global basis. I cannot attest to whether the consent tools actually work, are enforced for advertisers outside the EU, or the advertisers actually honor them. All I know is that if we don't wish to ourselves geolocate every user to our site, then we are required to show the consent controls to everyone. Regards, @Dima
