Jim,

We must proceed with caution here. We do not want to give parents such ideas. This could only lead to more taxes.

Funny, but I grew up in a nonsmoking home, although I did manage to corrupt Father sometime in the late 1960s or early 1970s. He had been the most occasional of smokers over the years--and I do mean occasional, smoking a pipe, cigar, or cigarette maybe three or four times a year. Mother was and is a militant anti-smoker who actually voted for the exorbitant California cigarette tax of 1988. I took great pleasure in canceling that vote, but as you can see it was a lost cause.

Mother and Father both grew up in smoking households; their fathers smoked but not their mothers. Three out of the four lived long and happy lives. My maternal grandmother died relatively young, at age 66, the cause of death being a brain aneurysm--something she may well have been born with.
