And wouldn't you think that parents, whether the studies are definitive or not yet, would want to avoid exposing their children to the possibility of harm from secondary smoke? Or anyone else for that matter-- rather than arguing over their right to do so? I think the problem is when people are told what they may or may nor do, they automatically want to rebel; were they left to make their own decisions, they probably would tend to be considerate in their behavior.

We all need more tolerance for differences in our crowded world; we seem to get confused between what is merely irritating and what is really life threatening. Passion for causes, belief in having one's own rights respected, seems sometimes to take precedence over common courtesy. Many things are irritating, but seriously harmful to our welfare? Or completely out of our control?
As I type I'm watching big clouds of smoke blow by the study windows---Dan is on the porch smoking his pipe. He knows that I can't stand smoke and because he loves me, he has never made an issue out of his "right" to smoke his pipe in his house, but goes outside. I am very grateful for this; in return, I respect the not so elegant presence of his autographed baseballs and basketballs on the shelves next to the first editions and the Lladro shepherdess.
