I don't know where that comes from, Maher was brilliant, he is always brilliant. I didn't see anything smarmy about that monologue. . That fucking kid was smirking and Maher was the only one I read to say that out loud. In fact what the kid was doing was the epitome of smirking.
What part of his monologue was insincere or excessive? Maher was certainly sincere and what was excessive was that little shits smirk-lol!!! The kid was the quintessential right wing fool!
Smarmy: "ingratiating and wheedling in a way that is perceived as insincere or excessive.
"a smarmy, unctuous reply"
Smarmy: <unctuous, ingratiating, smooth, slick, oily, greasy, fulsome, flattering, obsequious, sycophantic, fawning; More
Maher has been my favorite comedian for 20 years and I find him one of the most refreshing intellectual leaders in the world because he more than almost anyone speaks truth to power and knows what he is talking about. He is educated and sane.
He never sells out like almost everyone else. He is a hard core democrat and atheist and tells it like it is.
I know of no one I respect more than Maher. My other favorite comedians are Seth Meyers, Trevor Noah and Seth MacFarland and John Oliver.

I find Maher smarmy. Excerpts, including the Coulter discussion, are on my thread:
