Speed is not all important. Speed in air is problematic for fuel consumption which quadruples with each doubling of speed. Hence altitude to reduce drag and increase speed.

A vital function of military people is to keep budgets growing and opm proliferating. Enemies are needed only sufficient to keep the money moving.

Some equipment turnover is also important to enhance cash flow. Therefore some conflict is desirable.

Hordes of 13 year old boys are becoming highly adept at manoeuvering remote avatars which is what a drone is.

One boy could manage a dozen drones as mostly they could self-manage. Sometimes fast intelligent decisions would be needed that the on board or remote artificial intelligence couldn't handle.

I recall conversations with Joseph Yim of BP Oil Singapore who was a part time fighter pilot for Singapore . We were in London for a month on a training course in 1981. He explained that my thinking about relative values was wrong = in fact the pilots exceed the aircraft value. I had assumed the reverse.

By sending the aircraft out without pilots they become much more disposable. Especially when they can be made tiny and cheap.

I imagine high speed aircraft carriers that carry 1000 little aircraft, few crew, and only 30 metres long. The pilots could be in Peoria.

CO2 lasers seem like a good weapon. Maybe they'd be ineffectual against things coated in aluminium = reflective. A good mirror mechanism might be able to return the beam to sender.
