President Trump’s tariffs are expected to cost the firm $120 million, expenses the struggling company does not need.
President Trump is encouraging a consumer boycott for Harley-Davidson if the company moves oversea, calling the idea “great” according to CNN.
On Sunday, Trump tweeted, "Many @harleydavidson owners plan to boycott the company if manufacturing moves overseas. Great!" Trump wrote. "Most other companies are coming in our direction, including Harley competitors. A really bad move! U.S. will soon have a level playing field, or better."
Over the weekend, Trump hosted “Bikers for Trump” supporters at his golf club in New Jersey. His comments about Harley Davidson came after dozens of bikers came to his clubhouse.
Tensions between Harley Davidson and Trump have been mounting since Trump imposed substantial tariffs on steel and aluminum imports in an attempt to bolster domestic manufacturing. In response, the European Union retaliated by promising to impose tariffs on imports from the U.S., including Harley Davidson motorcycles.
Harley Davidson would take a huge hit if this happened. They would stand to lose as much as $100 million a year. The company has said they would shift some of its production abroad so that it could avoid the new tariffs.
Trump said Harley Davidson was using the EU tariffs as “an excuse” to move manufacturing abroad. Trump claimed that the company was already planning to shift some of their operations to Thailand.
Harley Davidson said that while they were already planning on moving some of their operations abroad, they would now move more, as it would be “the only sustainable option.” |
