That dovetails nicely with a documentary we watched last year about how elderly Japanese still living in the "modern" apt. developments where they raised their families are feeling isolated and lonely... so aside from saving up one's pension while in the slammer, they also get more social interaction.

My family has many ties to Japan and people there, so I pay attn., but I have to also point out that the nature of Jail vs. prison is very different both here and there... also, the Japanese are such a homogenous society (and very xenophobic, esp. vs other asians) that their jail and prison populations are quite different from ours... a lot less violence, and becoming a lot more like assisted living...

My wife's sister-in-law's mother was a retired "show girl" from way back in the day and to put off having to move into assisted living when she hit late 80s, she booked 3 years on a LT cruise ship (she'd worked on a lot of them in her youth)... she claimed it was as good as assisted living and cheaper, too...

Never ceases to amaze me how clever homo sapiens can be when facing life-altering situations.
