more Irish ex-pats worldwide than all of Ireland combined.

I take classes for retired people at the University. No tests.

Todays lesson was on issues of immigration. One section discussed why there are more Irish in America than birthrates can account for.

It seems that after the 3rd generation there are many people with a rather small percentage of Irish heritage who none-the-less self identify as Irish. This is true of many groups besides Irish, but the opposite is also true that at various times people don't acknowledge other ancestors. The favored groups go in and out of fashion at different points in our history. It was an interesting take on assimilation backed by a lot of statistics and census records.
