Jeff, funny you should mention Gateway and Boston Acoustic Speakers. The Jan. 6, 1998 PC Magazine has a review of sound cards and speakers. It's a good article, particularly the speaker part. They had good things to say about the Boston Acoustics. They review both Boston Acoustics MicroMedia ($219 list) and Boston Acoustics MediaTheater ($349 list). The MediaTheater come with the Gateway G6-300XL, whereas the BA Micromedias come with the G6-266 and G6-300, and the D5-166 (Destination). Both sets were not in the "official" part of the review, but were in a sidebar review of "High-End Speakers", along with ones from Bose, Cambridge Soundworks, and Yamaha. PC Mag reviewers were extremely impressed with the MediaTheater system, which they say "...and the organ bass on the bundled Surround Test I CD was literally room-shaking---it actually blew out a lighted match held up to the port of the subwoofer!"
Also a couple of issues back in PC Mag, John Dvorak was impressed enough with the quality of the Boston Acoustics MicroMedia speakers to say, "for $200, just order them".
To be fair, anyone looking for speakers should read the Jan 6 1998 review, because the editors also really liked other speakers as well, and in fact gave Editor's Choice to both Altec Lansing ACS48 ($150 street), and Cambridge SoundWorks ($200 street).
