Holly, All of our bodies are challenged with cell mutations due to free radicals, ionizing radiation, chemicals,etc. There are mechanisms by which cells can repair damage. Some people have a more effective repair system than others, just as some have a better immune system than others. There is a tendancy to pass on those traits. That is why cancer runs in families. We cannot yet tell which types that we are, but we will be able to soon. You are lucky to have ancestors that lived to an old age, but that doesn't mean that you will for sure, only that you have a higher probability to do so. Smoking is an unnecessary added challenge of free radicals and carcinogens. If you choose to continue to smoke, it would be wise to take antioxidant supplements.
