Keith, If they make CE the de facto standard in palm tops and the palm OS of
3COM fades and 3Com must buy CE from MSFT, you have a classic exclusionay
monopoly. MSFT can price the CE at the point where 3Com makes a loss on each
palm pilot they sell and MSFT makes a profit, since they get a CE fee from 3Com,
and pay no fee to themselves to use their own CE.


Well, such is the marketing power of MSFT. Like most of us on this thread, I am in awe of the dynamics of the money-making-machine that is MSFT. But, unlike some of us, I do not attribute the development of this awesomeness to MSFT's early on having had marketing and legal people who are any smarter than those in other companies (not to say that they aren't smart). It's just that no other company (except for perhaps Gary Kildall's Digital Research) had the good luck of being positioned to do so.
