Never been a friend of (food) treat based training.

I tend to agree with that, but think it depends on the dog and the circumstances. This guy hated the kennel and I needed to get him to associate it with a positive experience. I generally played with him around the kennel and I got tuckered out and then gave him the treat inside. Most of the timer when I trained a dog, i gave them a lot of praise during the session and a treat when we where finished. That Sheltie wasn't a "foodie" but he loved praise, and his favorite word words were ball or Frisbee. He used to love car rides too. I also used to take him running with me.

Another Sheltie that i had would get car sick and hated the sight of cars. She would vomit in a mile or two. There was an ice cream place about a mile from my house and we'd started driving there with her and let her have a little ice cream and soon she got over her car fear. That was my vets idea as I don't like to feed my dogs people food. I never liked them sitting around the table begging for food.
