<It’s already Seattle’s Snowiest February in 70 Years, and There’s More on the Way — GSM

February 11, 2019

Cap Allon

After a weekend snowstorm pummelled the usually mild Northwestern city, another one-two punch is expected this week.

According to an NWS Seattle tweet, this month is already Seattle’s snowiest February since 1949. And, at -8.9C (16F), the city witnessed its lowest February temp since 1989 when -10C (14F) was recorded.

The next snowstorm is forecast to hit Sunday night, bringing 1-2 inches of snow, AccuWeather said, and another would pile on 3-6 inches Monday afternoon into Tuesday.

The snow will ride a wave of record cold.

“This February in Seattle is going to be remembered for brutal winter weather for many folks not used to it,” Weather.us meteorologist Ryan Maue said.>

<With plenty of snow on the ground and clearing skies its going to be a cold night. Forecast low in Seattle, 16°. This would be the coldest low temperature in Seattle since Nov. 24, 2010 ( 14° ) and the coldest low in February in 30 years ( 14° Feb 5th, 1989 ). #wawx #wasnow

The first weekend storm, which brought 6-10 inches of snow to the area, emptied grocery store shelves, shut schools and made travel treacherous. The coming storms would not just be limited to Seattle either, but would also target Portland, Bend and Pendleton, Oregon; and Yakima and Spokane, Washington.

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee declared a state of emergency in advance of the fierce weather on Friday. He joined local officials encouraging people to stay off the roads and to check on the elderly and vulnerable.
